Me having no clue what I'm supposed to do with my life.
Who Am I? What's My Calling?
How daunting and annoying it is when you hear all your friends having a clear vision of what they want to do with their lives, and here you're still struggling with your calling!
While there is no magic formula to find out your calling in life, let's try and roughly figure it out with the help of an analogy. It's a fun method to figure out our personalities and know what calling is best suited for us.
The Ball Analogy
In this analogy we're going to take a look at different balls like basket ball, golf ball, etc. and identify our personalities with them.
Are You a Basket Ball?
Are you the kind of person who loves to bounce to the top? Do you always aim high? Are you the kind of person who doesn't mind being bounced or pushed around as long as you reach your goal?
You desire to reach the top and are willing to pay the price. You are willing to work night and day to succeed. You dream BIG! You are born to be a CEO! A top level management job is where you will feel most fulfilled.
Are you a Ball?
Do you love a wide arena? You are not a person who can be limited to a small playing field. You love traveling long distances to reach your goal.
You would make a suitable fit in the Merchant Navy, Army, Oil Rig or even as a pilot/air-hostess. You deal maturely with being away from family and friends for long periods and once back home you are waiting to be out again because you love your job.
Are You a Soccer Ball?
Do you love the limelight? Do you thrive on the applauds of the crowd? Do you love facing the crowds? Does coming forward fulfill you to your very core?
If yes, then the entertainment field is a good place for you. Acting, dancing, music, sports, public speaking, emceeing, etc. are areas you will thrive in. Pursue a job that will give you the opportunity to capture the attention of crowds.
Are you a Billiards ball?
You're a family person and while you love your job, you're also not willing to compromise family time. You need a job with a smaller arena so as to be able to balance family and career.
You love pursuing a job but your job cannot usurp your day. You need a job that doesn't demand too many hours and is flexible. Teaching, freelancing, or any middle level management job may prove to be the right fit for you.
Are You an Exercise Ball?
Do you love serving people, even if it's at the cost of your own comfort? You value the lives of those you serve even higher than your own. You have a heart that's willing to sacrifice for the greater good.
You are willing to test your limits during the course of your work. In fact, the more you're pushed, the more you strive to move forward. You will excel as a doctor, nurse, firefighter, paramedic, counselor, etc.
Are You a Bowling Ball?
Do you love a straight fixed path in your professional life? You know what you want to do and are determined to get the necessary degrees to achieve it. You don't even care if you don't see the Sun's rays to reach your goal.
You absorb yourself in your work and are willing to pay the cost even if it means not having a social life. You'll thrive as an engineer, surgeon, lawyer, scientist, astronaut, etc. You love the straight fixed path and because you love what you do and you excel at it.
Are You a Bouncy Ball?
You are creative and love thinking outside the box. You can't be caged at a desk 24*7. You need to move out talk to people, see life at its fullest to be fulfilled from within.
You are focused and when you hit something it's definitely out of the box. Chasing stories and the truth makes you thrive. You feel the most fulfilled as a writer, journalist, travel writer, etc.
Are You a Beach Ball?
You love living your live to the fullest. You love adventure and don't wish to be confined by work alone. For you work is a part of life and cannot take up a major chunk of it. You're not highly ambitious and work to earn a living.
You wish to spend time traveling or pursuing your hobbies. A job in middle management or any job that allows you to switch off during the weekends is the kind of job you will feel most fulfilled in.
It's important to note that this ball analogy is just a broad classification. It does not in any way define who you are or what you are to do with your life.
What will help you find your true purpose in life?
What you need to do is :
What inspires me?
What makes my eyes sparkle?
What do I want more than anything in life?
What gives me a sense of fulfillment?
What are my non-negotiables in life?
